CHARACTERIZED @ KCDW 2014

Lightly competitive yet with no shortage of creative pride, CHARACTERIZED @ KCDW blended a unique perspective on characters, with a visceral exposure to designers' techniques and instincts. In partnership with Kansas City Design Week, CHARACTERIZED incorporated Cut&Paste's experimental team format to bring character designers together for an onstage throwdown. Teams of 2 artists each created throughout multiple rounds of design, using computers and analog tools to make original characters. This event was a dynamic mashup of designers where an audience witnessed work broadcasted on projection screens while teams made designs in real-time.

TOURNAMENT ARTWORK   //   Theme : Friendly Rivalry

In this competition, 3 teams of 2 designers were challenged to create a pair of original characters that represent competitive rivals. Over the course of 3 rounds, each team developed the characters and a scene. In the first 10-minute offstage round, teams prepared a black & white sketch of their first character. In the second 10-minute round, they created a black & white sketch of their second character. In the final 15-minute round, designers created a final scene containing their rivals competing, playing, or interacting in a playful way as rivals.
