WHAT’S HAPPENED AT CHARACTERIZED NEW YORK 2013
What's a character tour without New York? We brought the battle to BK's Music Hall of Williamsburg for a look at how NYC loves characters. We challenged designers to create villain characters that we can't help but love despite their chaotic qualities! A sketch wall, a photo booth, lovable villains, awesome designers - We'd say the night was nothing short of amazing. Congrats to Julian Glander & Juliet Phillips for taking home the prize w/ their smelly, lovable swamp monster.
TOURNAMENT ARTWORK // Theme : Villains We Love
In this competition, the 3 teams of 2 designers were challenged to create two original village characters, only one of which was used for a final composition in the final round. The competition was made up of 3 onstage rounds, each intended to create a product to be used in the following round. Despite the villain's evil qualities, we can’t help but love them and their design must communicate those qualities of both “evil” and “lovable.” In the first 10-minute onstage round, competitors prepared a black & white sketch of their first Villain character. In the second 10-minute round, they prepared a second black & white sketch of the 2nd Villain character. After round 2, the audience determined for each team their choice of villain between each team’s 2 sketches. In the final 15-minute round, the teams added full detail in color, texture, and style the Villain incorporating their chosen audience sketch of an object or accessory.

JULIAN GLANDER's work radiates a playful, manic energy--'whimsical' seems to be the word people throw around the most. Glander's background--[no, call me Julian, I insist]-- Julian's background is in creative writing, which may be why he often solves communication problems by inventing characters and universes for them to inhabit. Also, he's from Detroit and now lives in Brooklyn. I guess that's not really important.

Since 2000, I've been working in the animation and graphic design industries but my true passion comes out when illustrating and creating new original characters. An eye for design, a mind for concepts, and a skilled hand for illustration all come together in one package whenever I'm creating new work. 'Jon Burgerman makes vibrant, neo primitive scrawls of shapes and colour. He's pushed his monster-like characters into compositions where cartoon-like forms are crammed on top of each until they create a screaming mass of energy. Intensely prolific, he has pushed the character obsession of the late 90s into a far more interesting and strong direction. Think Walt Disney at an Incan monument on mescaline.'
- Francesca Gavin, author of Street Renegades and 100 New Artists (published by Laurence King), Visual Arts Editor Dazed & Confused
Jon Burgerman has risen to be one of the prominent artists in the recent boom of practitioners who traverse the disciplines of contemporary art, design, illustration and entrepreneurism. His award winning work can be seen globally from gallery and bedroom walls to cinema and iPhone screens. A sense of British self-deprecation, dry humour and modern-day anxiety imbues his work along with an enthusiasm for salad.
Burgerman exhibits internationally and has shown work along side artists such as Banksy, Damien Hirst, Vivienne Westwood and Gerald Scarfe. His work is collected worldwide and is in the permanent collections of The Victoria and Albert Museum and The Science Museum in London. He gives lectures, public performances and occasionally pop concerts with his band Anxieteam. In 2008 he appeared as a guest on the popular BBC TV show Blue Peter and in 2009 was part of the original The Underbelly Project, which saw selected artists exhibit in a secret incomplete 100 year old subway station deep underneath the streets of New York City.
He has received a Cannes Lions Advertising award, two D&AD Silver award nominations and has collaborated with brands that include: Pepsi, CocaCola, Nike, Sony, Sky, Kidrobot, Puma, Nintendo, MTV, Levis, 55DSL, Miss Sixty, AOL, Size? and Rip Curl. He also designed a special sick bag for Virgin Atlantic flights.
Burgerman lives and works in New York and online.
