This year at SIGGRAPH, we hosted 2 different competitions, both driven by the theme of "Alter Ego." First, we hosted a PLAY DATE where all SIGGRAPH attendees participated! Attendees came by our booth in The Studio to create their own Alter Ego character in a 10-minute sketching round using an HP Z1 Workstation. The winner received a Wacom Intuos5 Medium Tablet and had their artwork displayed onstage during our live CHARACTERIZED event. The audience picked a winning sketch from this offstage round. Then, we hosted a PIXEL PLAYOFF, a fast design throwdown directly following RealTimeLive! 3 teams of two designers competed in a final round of design to complete a character live onstage.
In this competition, 3 teams of 2 designers are challenged to create an Alter Ego of an existing, publicly known character. Over the course of 2 rounds, designers developed this character and a scene in which they express mastery of a subject. In the first 10-minute onstage round teams prepared a black & white sketch of their patron saint character in either 2D or 3D. In the 15-minute final round, designers created a final scene containing their detailed Alter Ego character.
