Cut&Paste’s first custom design tournament series, CHARACTERIZED serves as a design lab of sorts. While lightly competitive, each event is formatted to blend a unique perspective on the design of characters with a visceral exposure to each designer’s technique and instincts. In addition to observing their creative choices, events can either be composed of individual artists or based on a team format featuring the mashup of dynamic designers coming together to create original characters.
KEEPING IT FRESH
The most common question we hear at Cut&Paste is: “What are the differences you see in design between the cities you visit?” In short, it’s impossible to express verbally. For this reason, the official goal of CHARACTERIZED is to make each show a visually stimulating study in character design intent and technique. Each event's format is different, each challenge with its own sense of direction, each artist using different techniques and process. Our only guarantee – you will learn something different from each event.
WHAT EXACTLY HAPPENS?
CHARACTERIZED integrates with conferences and also hosts one-off pop-up events. Depending on the space, there may be an onstage show with artists showing their skills projected live onscreen. Audience members are invited to create sketches that may be incorporated into the onstage artists final designs. CHARACTERIZED also hosts fully participative events where all attendees are invited to create their own original characters. Onstage or offstage, artists are presented with a creative brief to design a character following an on-the-spot theme. Creators execute the brief throughout rapidly timed rounds of design. During these rounds, designers alternate sketching, adding color, and creating scenes using digital and physical tools, accompanied by plenty of booze, DJs, and live bands. Everyone wraps up an event when a winning character is chosen.
WHO WILL COMPETE
Cut&Paste invites individual artists or teams to participate in each event, and any character designer interested in competing may throw their hat in the ring by applying with our Online Form. There is no hard deadline for applying for CHARACTERIZED. All applicants will be considered on a rolling basis and will be notified if they will be invited or not for their selected tournament. Applicants may apply without indicating a teammate. If an applicant is invited, Cut&Paste will work with him/her in selecting a partner of their choice (e.g. friend, colleague) if the event is team-based.
